APPLE
Apple's third quarter was a bit of a roller coaster ride. Early reports had Apple's sales falling significantly in April and May. According to a survey of 7,000 stores conducted by Computer Intelligence, sales of the Macintosh dropped 30% to 50% in these two months from one year ago. New purchases of the Macintosh have dropped even in those companies in which the Macintosh comprises 25% to 50% off all computers. By the end of the quarter, sales were down 15% from a year ago but about the same as the previous quarter. Apple lost $32 million in the third quarter compared to a profit of $103 million for the same period last year. The loss would have been worse except for a gain of $39 million from the sale of Apple's investment in America Online.

Ellen Hancock has been named to the posts of Executive Vice President for Research and Development and Chief Technical Officer. Ms. Hancock most recently worked with Gilbert Amelio, Apple CEO, at National Semiconductor. Before that, she worked for almost 30 years at IBM. REMOTE ACCESS TO THE OFFICE NETWORK
What is the number one reason for an employee to access their office network from a remote location? The answer, according to a survey conducted by Infoworld, is to work from home after business hours. 76% of the respondents indicated that they access the office network after hours, 59% do so on business travels, 37% are mobile workers, and 33% telecommute.
