NEW WEB DOMAIN NAMES
The International Ad Hoc Committee recently announced a number of changes including the creation of seven new domain names. The seven areas of emphasis and the new names are: business/firm (.frm), goods for purchase (.store), WWW related activities (.web), culture/entertainment (.arts), recreation/entertainment,
(.rec), information services (.info) and individual/personal nomenclature (.nom). The seven new names are in addition to the current names of .com, .org and .net. The Committee expects to activate the new names by the end of the year but their plan may hit a snag. The .web domain name has been licensed by AlterNic. Expect legal action.
In addition to the new domain names, the Committee will be authorize up to 28 new registrars to administer them. Network Solutions, Inc. will continue to be the sole registrar of the three original domain names. (Source: CommunicationsWeek; 2/10/1997).
BARGAIN PERSONAL COMPUTERS
Several computer manufacturers, including Packard-Bell NEC and Compaq have introduced personal computers that retail for less than $1,000. The computers feature a 1GB or larger hard drive, a CD-ROM drive, an internal modem, speakers and basic software such as word processing, Internet browser and a few games.
Should you consider buying one? It depends. Manufacturers have cut costs by including older Intel or non-Intel CPU chips, reducing the number of slots and drive bays for future expansion. Compaq's model does not include a monitor which would increase the total price by $250 or more. Packard-Bell NEC's model includes a monitor with a much larger dot pitch than what is common on the higher priced models. If you are looking for a second machine for home or word processing, games or to surf Internet, they may meet your needs. (Source: Wall Street Journal; 2/20/1997, 2/24/1997).
WEB SITE OF THE MONTH
This month's selection is the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. With over 60,000 images available, you are able to view over half of their holdings from the comfort of your home. I recommend starting with the Imagebase Tour and to check the on-line calendar for future exhibits before you leave. Each image is accompanied with a brief description of the work and artist. The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco is located at www.famsf.org. (Source: Wall Street
Journal, 1/3/1997).
